Ps audio sprout6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() So, you want to first ensure that these features are present before making any further mover. Not all amplifiers come with DAC functions. But you see, I only needed good audio for the dollar. The seller showed me all the cool stuff he kept in his store and asked me to choose anything, telling me about all the features to them all. When I was buying my first amplifier, I was very excited when I got to the store. It will take you very few to look at all its features, set it up, and start using the sprout100. On the other hand, we have those who prefer to remain anonymous, and they will go for the simplest product as long as it gives them the sound output they needed like what the Sprout100 offers.Ī headphone amplifier like the Sprout100, in this case, is all about performance and bass boost. Some people want a full setup with Dolby functions, and all the good staff money can buy. We all have different needs when it comes to audio use. Here are a few things to look out for: Your needs What to consider when buying a DAC and power amplifierīefore we get into the sprout100 integrated and original sprout, I thought it would be better to remind ourselves of the features that make a good best stereo amplifier. In this review, I will be looking majorly at the functionality of the PS audio Sprout100 integrated DAC, headphone, and power amplifier. The best thing about these amplifiers is that they focus more on music quality than too much beauty. There are those who will go for full features, scouting for things they will never even useīut minimalist audiophiles like myself prefer the reserved simplicity. You see, the modern world is infested with so many amplifiers that choosing the right one can be overwhelming. Although I never used one before, I always wanted to try it out. Probably not ideal for enthusiasts that frequent HeadFi expecting something that could compete in the DAC/Amp combo market, but again those don't offer speaker outputs either. The PS Sprout100 has always fascinated me with its simple looks. Excellent build quality, excellent looks, and again fun. I think this small integrated amp was really intended for someone getting into hifi with a easy to use interface and a couple of basic easy to use inputs and outputs. This was certainly a fun setup, and I never properly tested the bluetooth connectivity or "vinyl" input, but I moved onto a setup I am much happier with. The headphone amp was fairly forgettable, did the job, didn't add much coloration to the sound While this was certainly a step up from the Audio Engine D1, the more I read, just about anything is a step up from the Audio Engine D1. I found the Wolfson WM8524 (certainly not in the WM8740 / 8741 quality level) to lack clarity, and frankly sounds a bit muddy to me through my HD650's. ![]() ![]() I rarely use the sprout anymore, mostly just to run my B&W speakers. Well reporting in after a couple months of use. I am interested to see how it sounds up against a decent DAC/Amp combo to see how it stacks up. I plan on bringing my Sprout to a local meet so I can see what some others think. Again, low end is lacking, but this is likely as much the speakers fault, will have to add a sub down the road. I have a pair of Bowers and Wilkens CDM2 SE speakers that I got cheap off from Ebay. I am using this for my computer setup where I do a bulk of my listening. I find myself getting lost in my favorite songs.Īs for the speaker output - cant complain. There seems to be a bit missing from the low end, but all the way from the upper bass to the top end sounds lush. The solid state amp seems to have enough power across most of frequency range to satisfy my needs and certainly blows the D1 out of the water. I am stepping up from a Audio Engine D1 which lacks the clarity and body to make my HD650's really live up to their potential. I know this sound is a bit colored from a true neutral sound, but it works very well for me. After feeding it a steady diet of 24 bit flac files, I have determined that I love the Dual Wolfson DACs. Setup couldnt have been easier with a quick download from PS Audio's website. So I went ahead and purchased the sprout anyway, right price, right set of features. ![]()
